The Problem
Every year, ghost gear (abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear) enters the ocean, harming our ocean’s ecosystems and, what is rarely said, the fishers’ livelihoods.
The Project
Co-funded by the European Union, LIFE OASIS aims to prevent ghost fishing gear and strengthen the livelihoods of artisanal fishers in the Mediterranean.
Together with fishers, researchers, technology companies, and NGOs, UNU OCEANO is developing intelligent fishing tools and a circular business model to prevent ghost gear and increase fishers’ profitability.
