LIFE OASIS

Mitigating the negative interactions of turtles with ghost gear

LIFE OASIS, an EU-funded project in Italy, Spain, and Malta, operates at the intersection of marine protection and sustainable fishing to tackle and prevent marine litter and ghost gear — abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) that threatens species like the loggerhead turtle.

From 2024 to 2029, LIFE OASIS brings together 10 partners and stakeholders to develop innovative and sustainable solutions that protect marine biodiversity and promote responsible fishing practices.
At its core, the project collaborates closely with artisanal fishers, navigators, and patrol boats, the true guardians of the sea, empowering them in activities such as designing and testing new aFADs, sea turtle rescue and the reporting and recovery of ALDFG.

Together with these fishers and partners, UNU OCEANO focuses on the artisanal Mediterranean anchored FAD (Fish Aggregating Device) fisheries of Malta, Italy, and Spain to design a replicable and scalable solution for ocean conservation and a business model that benefits those who adopt these sustainable practices. Because only when fishers benefit from it, ocean impact scales. UNU OCEANO further co-leads the project together with Alnitak.
